Connectors: 'and', 'when'

We use 'when' to join two sentences where one sentence tells the time of the action. The sentences could also be related by cause and effect.
It provides a necessary transition between the two ideas in the sentence.

We use 'and' to connect two sentences that are similar. In this example, both describe the children cleaning their footwear.

Mrs Soh

Helping out!

Dear children,

We learnt about helping out around the house! There's nothing too big or small to help, so long you put your heart in it. The first video is a song about helping out at home, and the cartoon shows how we can help out with things in more than one way, and the importance of organising our things. Enjoy!

Sincerely,
Mrs Soh

Comprehension

Dear children,

We worked on our comprehension skills today. These are some of the things we can try when we want to understand the story. Today we tried acting the story out (visualising). We will continue to work on our other comprehension skills soon!

We also revised past tense of words. We tried identifying all the verbs in the story, The Chinese Opera Game, and we got all excited. It was really fun!

That's all for today, see you tomorrow!

Sincerely,
Mrs Soh

Remembering Mr Lee Kuan Yew

Dear children,

I would like to dedicate this late Friday's post to our late founding father, Mr Lee Kuan Yew. We have discussed with some depth about his contributions and how much Singaporeans feel for him. We watched many videos about his life, the long lines of people queuing to pay their last respects to him, and even discussed why we thought the officers who carried the coffin had to walk so slowly. Death was a very solemn topic and though not everyone of us can understand, some of our classmates who were more sensitive still dropped a tear or two.

We each wrote a little card to Mr Lee. Some of our friends' cards were displayed in school, some were brought over to the Parliament House, some were brought over to the Woodlands Civic Centre, one of the community sites.

Showing you Dylan's card:

On Sunday, the State Funeral Procession will commence at
12.30pm and be telecast “live” on national television. It would be the final goodbye to our dear Mr Lee.

(from http://www.rememberingleekuanyew.sg/state-funeral-service/)

I would like to share my favourite national day song, 'Home' by Kit Chan. This guitarist, Sungha Jung, is famous on YouTube for his exceptional guitar skills. He is one of the non-Singaporeans who respect Mr Lee and dedicates this song to him online. You might not know, but Mr Lee Kuan Yew is very well received and loved all over the world. This song brought tears to my eyes as I counted my blessings.

I pray for our country, that we will all strive and work towards a better Singapore, to continue Mr Lee Kuan Yew's legacy.

With lots of love,
Mrs Soh

Dance Practice and the silent 'w'

Dear children,

You may want to practise our dance by following what Grace and Francesca had put up! You can improve it further with more bouncing and moving left and right to the beat while dancing. Our mass dance practice is still too messy, we shall practise further before it gets uploaded.

We played the cymbals and claves to our big book and song, and we learnt that swords are pronounced with a silent 'w'! Watch this video to find out what other words are like that too.

Big Book: The Chinese Opera Game

Dear children,

Let's learn the vocabulary in this book! Click on the picture to be directed to this website where you can learn the meaning and spelling of the words! Use the 'Flashcard', 'Learn', 'Speller' and 'Test' to learn, and you can even play the games 'Scatter' and 'Space Race'. Hope this helps you with your spelling test this Friday!

Also, I'm sorry I have forgotten to give out your EL TR papers today. I'll pass your papers tomorrow instead. Please be patient! Meanwhile you can share with your parents if you have achieved your target.

There is a change in our timetable for Thursday. Our Art, Maths and EL lessons are being moved around in the same day. Do check the updated timetable under the 'Timetable' tab above.

See you tomorrow!

Sincerely,
Mrs Soh

Indefinite Pronouns

This is a story about four friends named Anybody, Everybody, Nobody, and Somebody. Try answering the questions that follow.
http://tx.english-ch.com/teacher/roj/indefinite%20pronouns1.gif

1. Was there work done by the four friends?
2. Why wasn’t there any accomplishment?
3. What should Everybody have done?
4. If you were one of them, what would you have done?
5. What do you think would have happened if the work had been accomplished?

Verbs that follow these pronouns...

Remember that when you see 'one' or 'body', they refer to only one, so it should be singular.

Anyone is
Someone is
Everyone is
Anybody is
Somebody is
Everybody is

Show and Tell Day 3

Day 3 and final day of our show and tell!

I have picked Jeevanesh's and Vishal's sharing to be uploaded here. Jeevanesh shared about his huge bowl of fishball noodles while Vishal shared about his plate of chicken rice.

And Sarifuldin's one as well.. He brought a real apple! It's funny when everyone tried to help him put up his apple. If you listened carefully in Jeevanesh's speech, some of the boys went 'ooooh' as Sarifuldin's apple rolled out from his ziplock bag to the floor.

Show and Tell Day 1

Dear children,

I'm pleased that most of you came prepared with your favourite food! Although this is not graded, I'm glad that you still put in the effort to share with the class. I have selected Alysa's and Aloysius's sharing to be posted here. I feel that in terms of content and public speaking, the two of them have done relatively better compared to the rest.

International Friendship Day songs

Dear children,

I'm looking for pupils to join me on stage to perform during our International Friendship Day assembly (Term 2 Week 2 Friday). Your class wasn't that interested but I do have a few of you who would want to be on stage. I'm looking for costumes as well, if you have clothes that represent another country, do let me know! Either you can be on stage with me, or you can lend it to a friend who doesn't have.

These are the two songs that I need pupils for:

What a Wonderful World

Hello to all the Children of the World

Hope to hear from you soon!

Sincerely,
Mrs Soh

Collective Nouns

Dear children,

We went back to collective nouns again, but this time we looked into the use of singular or plural verbs.

The group of pupils is dancing to the music.
A bunch of bananas is hanging on the tree.

When there is only 1 group, we use the singular verb 'is'.

The two groups of pupils are dancing to the music.
Three bunches of bananas are hanging on the tree.

Where there are 2 groups or more, we use the plural verb 'are'.

See you tomorrow!

Listening Practice

Dear children,

I'm attaching the questions for you to go through again for your revision. Common mistakes from your class include Section B: Phonics. Please listen carefully if the teacher asked for beginning sounds or ending sounds!

Our listening comprehension test will be on Monday after our TR. You will be listening to a recording in class.
 Sincerely,
Mrs Soh

GarageBand

Dear children,

Hope you enjoyed the IT lesson we had, we used the GarageBand app in the iPad.

Most of the groups managed to complete the task of recording a short piano piece as well as your reading. It got really loud towards the end though, and I had to remind you to have self-discipline.

Hope we can have a better day tomorrow!

Sincerely,
Mrs Soh

Revise: Preposition

Revise: Singular and Plural Nouns

Writing a story

Dear children,

We learnt more about writing stories! We watched the story of Redhill and we retold the story in our own words.
We used a writing template to organise our writing. Some of us even volunteered to share our work! Arfan, Aloysius, Shirlyn, Rayyan, Grace, Jovan and Guang Hon did a great job speaking in front of the class. I hope to see more of you taking that extra step forward!

I'm also pleasantly surprised with Chengze's work. Although he did not follow the template closely (guess he needed more space!), he managed to write a really nice and complete story. Great job, Chengze! You can do well if you put your heart in it!

This is what he wrote (I have yet to edit his work):
We will continue working on our writing soon, see you tomorrow!

Sincerely,
Mrs Soh

Attire for PAL and Workout

Dear children,

Attire for PAL from now on will be school uniform. We are starting our PAL dance module tomorrow and we will dance in the classroom. For the girls, please wear your PE shorts under your pinafore. This latest change is due to the parents' concern about you having to change your attire too many times in the week.

For our Wellington workout on Wednesdays, the attire has changed to our uniform as well.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask me. See you tomorrow!

Sincerely,
Mrs Soh

English Revision

Dear children,

We practised on our Comprehension and Grammar in class. Again, we worked on highlighting key words that point to us the answer.

A practice paper is given today. It's quite a long paper, I included more questions for you to practise. I will be revising on all the concepts the next few days in preparation for our TR next week.

New grammar item we learnt today: Modal Verbs

We learnt that we have to use the base form of the verb after the use of modal verb.

Shailesh can swim very well.
Glenn will go for his band practices.
You should try listening to this music.

Remember to revise your work! I'll be checking your English files from tomorrow onwards.

Sincerely,
Mrs Soh
